1st May 2010 - Four Corners and Spotlight on Members
Our Corners today were just for the morning so we quickly got down to work. June was doing stumpwork and had chosen “faces” as her subject today. Sylvia was teaching her group a lovely technique for making beaded bracelets and Iris was refreshing an old decorative braid known as Ric-Rac and using it to make flowers, owls, fish etc. A bit fiddly, but then so were the faces and bracelets, so a lot of concentration was required.
After lunch we cleared the tables to one side and watched Maureen and Coral lay out their work on tables. Lots of people could not wait for the talk and started studying the various techniques, many of which were totally new to some of our members. Maureen and Coral admitted to being rather nervous but they quickly got into their strides and gave us some insight into “City and Guilds” but, unlike on that other occasion, it all made absolute sense and we saw the value of all the preparation. Sometimes the documentation prior to the execution of a piece of work was just as intriguing as the finished item. We saw some lovely felt work, handmade paper crafts, hand and machine embroidery. Coral’s masks were particularly clever, as was Maureen’s toadstool picture.
At the end there were lots of questions before everyone descended on the display to examine things more closely in the light of what we had learned about their creation.
During the day a board was circulating concerned a goldwork dayschool we are arranging for Spring 2011 and the interest is such that we need to arrange two days. However, it was decided to abandon attempts to arrange a trip to the V&A to see the patchwork exhibition due to the high cost of hiring a coach.
There were lots of lovely things on the Show and Tell table, not the least of which was an array of postcards completed since our April meeting. It is so good to see our members proud to display their creations, and to watch everyone’s enthusiasm blossoming. Our members bring a huge variety of skills to the club but enthusiasm is something we all share.
Thirty-eight members attended the meeting and there were three visitors.
